The Introduction EP

Depression, drug addiction, social alienation, crime, dropping out of school…—the harmful effects of an absent or neglectful father are legion and well-documented. Seeing as the brute facts don’t seem to dissuade dudes from walking out on their their sons and daughters, however, up-and-coming soul songstress Kirby Lauryen has decided to try a different tack, framing the importance of present, engaged parenting in the form of a fresh, heartstring-tugging ballad. On Daddy’s Child, one of three artist-produced/written records on her forthcoming EP, the Berklee Music College student showcases her skills as an instrumentalist and composer as well as a vocalist. With only her own understated piano arrangement as an accompaniment, Lauryen offers several examples of the lasting psychological scars of fatherlessness, telling the men in question “If you think the hurt you cause don’t bruise, you got it wrong…” Has this emotionally-charged cut struck a chord? In addition to copping The Introduction, available online as of February 27, fans can tune into her YouTube channel daily for the latest installments of her ongoing Song a Day series.
