You’ve gotta love an artist who tells it like it is. Take Kokayi, for example: the DMV buzzmaker’s latest feature is titled Summery, and “summery” is exactly what it is. Fortunately for yours truly – since I have to, y’know, write a whole paragraph – there’s more to the cut than can be encompassed in a single adjective. Previously released on vinyl, this joint finds Kokayi (in his role as producer) eschewing the usual, silky-smooth conception of warm-weather music for something a little bouncier, pairing quirky brass stabs with bumping bass in an arrangement inspired by Fresh Prince classic Summertime. Lyrically, the headliner keeps things breezy and picturesque, lacing his beat with images of outdoor recreation (“Barbecues and the hustlers cars they wash, and the girls is out, and we on the watch…”); B-more repping guest Substantial concentrates on evoking the languorous feelings of a sweltering summer day in his second verse, and hookwoman Tamara Wellons tops it all off with the requisite dose of soul. Like what you’re hearing? This cut isn’t attached to any forthcoming project, but fans should keep an eye out for Kokayi’s forthcoming Robots & Dinosaurs remix EP!
