Kool G Rap - Sad

They say “age ain’t nothin’ but a number.” However, rap is for the most part a young man’s game, and in an age of here one day, gone the next sensations, it’s rare to hear a man over 40 still rocking a mic. Legendary New York City gangster rap founder Kool G Rap is that rarity. I’ll admit that as a young hip-hop fan I hadn’t heard much of Kool’s music before he made his DJBooth debut today with new single Sad, but after one listen I’m inspired to check out his entire catalog. On Sad, Kool’s street-centered rhymes lace tightly with DJ Supa Dave’s soul-sampled, boom-bap production, resulting in a simultaneously funky and grimy record that could easily provide the soundtrack to the next cop-gangster movie set in New York, especially with Kool G providing the plot as he lyrically pains us a verbal picture full of assaults, crime and punishment. Sad? I for one couldn’t be happier. Keep an eye out for Kool’s upcoming album, Riches Royalty Respect, (what more could you ask for?) which has yet to receive a release date.
