Kyle Rapps ft. Joell Ortiz - Hard Knock Children
In the world of hip-hop, nothing’s more important than staying true to your roots and remembering where you came from – and, since just about all of us spent our formative years chilling in an elementary school playground, indulging one’s inner child every now and again is crucial to staying grounded. On new EP single Hard Knock Children, Booth newcomer Kyle Rapps does just that, lacing Kev Brown‘s funk-infused boardwork (built, like the rest of the project’s beats, on samples from Boogie Down Productions’ Edutainment) with fond recollections of days spent tricycling, sucking on candy cigarettes and lusting after The Little Mermaid. Of course, it’s not all rosy nostalgia – on the hook, the Jersey native acknowledges the all-too-numerous dropouts who end up falling through the cracks. Brooklyn mainstay Joell Ortiz takes his own trip down Memory Lane on verse three, engaging in the most enthusiastic celebration of ‘80s-baby culture since, well, ‘80s Baby. Like what you’re hearing? More ear-pleasing and insightful tunes await on Rapps’ Re-Edutainment EP, scheduled to hit the net March 29.
