Lauryn Hill - Black Rage (sketch)

Posted 2 years ago
Producer:
Lauryn Hill
Album:
Unreleased

Given the title and timing of Lauryn Hill‘s latest feature, you could be forgiven for assuming that Black Rage was written as a response to Michael Brown’s shooting and the ensuing chaos in Ferguson, Missouri. In reality though, the song was recorded in the artist’s living room years ago—and the anger and hurt evident in it have been brewing for centuries. Wryly borrowing a melody from classic Rodgers and Hammerstein showtune My Favorite Things, Hill changes the lyrics into a list of the assaults, injustices and indignities that have been, and continue to be perpetrated on black people the world over. The guitar backdrop’s raw feel fits with the record’s painful subject matter. This incisive cut isn’t part of anything larger, but we’ll keep you posted on Lauryn Hill’s plans as we learn more.
