Lauryn Hill - Consumerism
Prior to reporting in for her three-month prison sentence for tax evasion, the reclusive Lauryn Hill made her first appearance on our pages with May’s Neurotic Society, a politically-charged promo cut whose frantic electronic production and motormouthed bars left many of the ex-Fugee’s fans utterly baffled. Well, turns out that record wasn’t a fluke. Fresh off her release earlier today, Hill heralds her comeback with a joint that shares its predecessor’s overwhelming vibe. Backed by an unknown beatsmith’s jittery polyrhythms and swirling synths, the artist delivers bars so densely-packed with radical rhetoric that they feel more like lyrical collage than straightforward social commentary: “Empty religious spontaneity is anarchism / Social Darwinism, barbarism, modern paganism.” Are you feeling the new Lauryn Hill? If so, keep it locked for further details on her Letters From Exile: Part I project, which has yet to receive a drop date.
