Don Cannon Presents: 4:57 AM

When an emcee introduces himself to Booth readers as Your Future Favorite Rapper and doesn’t get laughed out of the (figurative) room, you know he’s something special. On his latest mixtape leak, up-and-coming emcee Laws reminds us just how high he has his sights set: “I wanna be your Number One.” The Spring Hill native certainly has the versatility necessary to make it to the top; where his first feature was somber and introspective, this track is a funked-up party, thanks in large part to producer S-Type‘s upbeat instrumental (sampled from the great Bootsy Collins’ I’d Rather Be With You). Left Coast guest emcee Jay Rock shows equal ambition on his gruff middle verse (can there be two ‘number one’s?), spitting, “I’m the king – matter of fact, I’m lovin’ the crown.” Laws’ Don Cannon-presented 4:57 AM mixtape is set to drop in January 2010, and fans should be sure to tune in this Thursday for his contribution to our DJBooth.net Freestyle Series (the final entry till the series resumes on January 6).
