I'm Gay (I'm Happy)

When Wonton Soup was buzzing last August, my cousin asked me what I thought about Lil B. I told her that The Pack standout was like the Jim Carrey of rap. Beneath the outrageous and comic antics there was a serious artist lurking, and just like Etermal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind flipped my opinion of Carrey, new Lil B single Trapped in Prison may just change what people think about the Based God. Produced by Lou Pocus, who provides a mellow and dark beat that’s doesn’t cook, it simmers, Lil B discusses his life’s struggles in the United States, comparing the average man’s mental inhibition to being trapped (no closet) in a figurative prison. Whether Trapped is the sign of a more permanent musical style or merely a one-time thing, B appears to be more focused on displaying who he really is as an artist. I’m not saying that his recently released album I’m Gay (I’m Happy) will be his Illmatic, but balancing swag records with others that ooze positivity and seriousness will help him stick around.
