If Portland, Oregon has heard an emcee representative put in work on the Booth I can’t think of them, so even if newcomer Luck-One, making his Booth debut today with his new single More, isn’t literally the first rapper to appear on our pages, upper west coast music is so rare I won’t hesitate to call him a trailblazer. Blazer? Get it? Never mind. Let’s get into the music. Impressively, Luck manages to walk that often tenuous line between conscious music and party music, a balance producer T Mak strikes nicely by giving More a funky underpinning layered by hard-laced drums. But it’s Luck’s mic skills that truly make this one a standout as he touches on everything from slavery’s legacy to the ceaseless hip-hop grind with spitfire flows that include an equal mixture of anger and love for life. Hungry for more? You’re in luck. (God I’m ill with the puns today.) Luck-One’s True Theory Outakes EP drops October 4 right here on DJBooth, followed by the release of his full LP, True Theory, coming soon.
