Lupe Fiasco - Solar Midnite

Producer:
Lupe Fiasco
Album:
The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Go ahead and guess who one of Lupe Fiasco’s favorite rappers is? Go ahead. The answer: Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis. If you didn’t see that coming don’t worry, I didn’t either, but it all started to make sense after I heard Lupe’s latest cut Solar Midnite, a punk rock-meets-hip hop hybrid off the The Twilight Saga: New Moon Soundtrack. Having just delivered the similarly rockin Fire, here Lupe adopts a slow, not quite singing, not quite rapping flow that can only be described as, yes, Anthony Keidis-esque. Honestly, I’m personally a little worried. I hope he doesn’t pull a Mos Def and spend the next couple years doing experimental rock instead of rapping. Still, a creative force like Lupe can’t be constrained, and the man’s nothing if not a boundary breaker. The surprisingly good New Moon Soundtrack is available in stores now. In other words, with tracks like Solar Midnite on it, you shouldn’t be at all embarrassed to pick it up.
