Lyfe Jennings - Spotlight

I Still Believe

On Lyfe Jennings’ last single, the r&b vet did the seemingly impossible and made the bone-dry topic of Statistics seem sexy. How do you follow up such a dazzling feat? While I had my fingers crossed for a calculus-themed sequel, the more conventional Spotlight is too fresh for me to offer any complaints. What this joint lacks in math-related content, it more than makes up for in steamy grooves and creative game-spitting; over T-Minus’ uniquely catchy mix of sizzling synths and chopped vocals, Lyfe laces the beat with crooned come-ons that range from the commonplace (“It’ll be my pleasure girl to sweat out your weave.”) to the downright hilarious (“She say she’s into spooning, I say I’m into forking / I’m gonna kill that ass, call me love Kevorkian.”) If you like what you’re hearing, you won’t have to wait long for more; I Still Believe, the artist’s fourth (and sadly final) full-length is scheduled to arrive on store shelves tomorrow, August 31, via Warner Bros. In the meantime, check out Jacques Morel‘s coverage of the recent listening session, complete with video interview.
