If push came to shove, and with him it often does (just ask Yung Berg), I wouldn’t test Maino in anything. Rocks, papers, scissors, a game of checkers, Scrabble, you get the point. When they documented Maino’s rise to fame following a prison stint, we knew he was “about that life,” but notably, the audio version of Maino’s lifestyle, I’m About That Life, doesn’t fit in the same energetic vein as the song title would suggest. Its production, via Radio Maschine, is drowsy with militaristic drums and keys, holding its star down on an anchor instead of letting him breathe. Maino’s forced to merely run alongside the beat instead of the other way around, which makes for an awkward pairing about a topic Maino normally smashes with ease (see Million Bucks etc.). Or do I have it all wrong? If so lets me know in the comments below. Still awaiting a release date for his oft-delayed sophomore set, Maino continues to release new material on his own accord, tossing out appetizers that will hopefully be followed with something more filling soon.
