Mayer Hawthorne - I Need You

Posted 6 years ago
Producer:
Nottz
Album:
None (Promo Single)

Time to make like Bill & Ted on this one and jump in the Booth for a blast from the past. Mayer Hawthorne, the retro-crooner who’s somewhat unbelievably making his first appearances on our pages, is reaching back again, this time cooking up a supremely smooth track with I Need You, a song whose origins go way back to before I was born (like… twice my age). The cover of Otis Leavill’s 1969 original takes on a slightly jazzier and stronger vibe, thanks to the souped up production by Nottz. The similarities are striking; it’s the little things that differentiate the two tracks (sharper percussion, Hawthrone’s deeper delivery), but if you’re a lover of good music you can appreciate both songs for what they are: purely soulful R&B. However, in situations like this we always have to play the “which is better, the original or the cover?” game; there can be only one winner (sorry ‘A for effort’ advocates). Hawthorne apparently just did this track for fun, but if you liked this baby maker, be sure to keep it locked for more from the man.
