Mean Doe Green

A Harlem native who worked as a janitor before “movin’ on up” to become a successful entrepreneur, the patriarch of the Jefferson family is living proof that, with enough ingenuity and drive, individuals of any color, creed or social position can achieve the American Dream. Or he would be if he weren’t, you know, a fictional character. Well aware that real life is a little more complicated than the sitcom version, Mean Doe Green is nonetheless determined to secure his piece of the piece of the pie, by hook and/or crook. New single The George Jeffersons finds beatsmiths d.C. and Wes Avery passing up the ‘70s TV series’ classic theme song in favor of something a little harder-nosed, cooking up a street-ready guitar/piano-loop backdrop for the freestyle series alum‘s gritty aspirational rhymes. After Green’s ambitious opener, he cedes the mic to fellow Sacramento native C Plus, who expresses his own lust for wealth and status (not to mention Telemundo models) in a verse that’s at the very least, worthy of a solid B+. As always, though, I’ll leave it to readers to assign the final grades. If you like what you’re hearing, plenty more freshness awaits on Mean Doe Green’s self-titled full-length, coming soon.
