Most of us associate summer with with sweltering heat, long, lazy days and outdoor recreation, but for denizens of inner-city ‘hoods, it can be the coldest time of the year—according to the FBI, murder rates can rise as much as 16% during the months of June, July and August. On the latest single off Meek Mill‘s forthcoming mixtape, the Philly native describes the sights and sounds of the Middle of Da Summer in his crime-fraught home streets. Over Beat Bully‘s breezy synths and syncopated break (drawn from Mountain’s oft-sampled Long Red (Live)), Mills reminisces about the summers of his formative years, expressing nostalgia for the good times while vividly depicting the effects of the crack game on his community: “City of Brotherly Love—I was only 13, I seen a puddle of blood / Grown man layin’ there, he got one in his mug, his Grandma screamin’ ‘Told you about sellin’ them drugs!’” Guest emcee Mel Love brings the cut to a strong finish, with a closing 16 chronicling his own experiences on the block. Digging this uniquely gritty summer jam? More quality cuts await on Meek Mill’s first commercial mixtape, the DJ Drama-hosted Dream Chasers, dropping August 11.
