Time for a history lesson, readers. In 1965, the great Otis Redding, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, wrote and recorded a song entitled Respect. Two years later, in 1967, the equally great Aretha Franklin (the first female inductee to the R&R HOF) scooped up the record, changed its theme from male reverence to female empowerment, switched up the title to R-E-S-P-E-C-T and earned herself two Grammy awards. Now almost 45 years later, the record that Redding created and Franklin popularized is back in the mainstream thanks to The X Factor (U.S. Season 1) winner Melanie Amaro. Set to appear in Pepsi’s Super Bowl advertisement this Sunday, Amaro’s Respect is an upbeat club-ready affair produced by Stargate, which shares its sonic stylings from fellow mainstream-appealing pop acts like Jennifer Lopez and LMFAO. There is no set release date for Amaro’s forthcoming Epic Records debut album, but we’d imagine that this re-imagined version of Redding’s classic could go along way toward helping the young singer earn the respect she and her impressive upper register vocals deserve.
