Better Run, Booth readers; in a shocking, Jekyll/Hyde-esque metamorphosis, mild-mannered soul songstress Ayah has transformed into a monstrous alter ego by the name of Merna. Before you hightail it out of town, though, I encourage you to give her new single a spin. The first release off a forthcoming project under the T-Dot native’s newly-adopted persona, this cut is a striking change of pace from the breezy vibe of records like Notorious. Makai Black sets an ominous mood on the production tip, pairing a spare organ riff with menacing percussion as the singer warns onlookers to flee immediately, lest they get caught in her growing swath of destruction. Digging Ayah’s darker side? Then stay tuned; Merna’s forthcoming debut set currently lacks both a title and a drop date, but we’ll keep you posted on the project as further details emerge.
