About It All

Like most rappers who aren’t in the game out of sheer masochism, Mista Mista is sustained in his arduous grind by visions of a bright future—and, being only human, he occasionally experiences moments of frustration and disappointment when those dreams refuse to come true as quickly as he’d like. On new single Wake Up, the Rhode Island native spins his impatience with the game into grist for the musical mill; LJC sets a subtly determined mood on the percussion, crafting a driving choral synth-percussion groove which the emcee proceeds to lace with tenacious lyrical fire: “Let’s keep it one-hundred man, why would I stop? / See I came from the bottom, had to climb to the top / When ain’t nobody believed I left ‘em all shocked / Now the world gonna remember my name like Tupac.” Brooklyn representative (and freestyle alum) D. Julien exhibits similar steely ambition on the closing 16, and hookmzan Neil Letendre rounds out the lineup, lending a pop-rock vibe to the chorus. Digging it? Then why not support Mista²‘s grind by picking up a copy of his About It All LP, when it drops in late July?
