If the Street Lights in ghettos across America suddenly and miraculously sprouted the biological equipment necessary to produce speech, they’d have some grisly tales to tell. The latest street single from Mobb Deep finds Prodigy and Havoc speculating about that very possibility. Over the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League‘s delicate piano loops and slow-rolling rhythm section, the Big Apple underground mainstays “shed a little light on the cheapness of life in inner-city neighborhoods everywhere, drawing attention to the many lost for every individual who makes it out of the trap: “...we concentratin’ on the bacon, lotta lives got taken, lotta time spent in cages, so we spend our days doin’ whatever must be done to be the ones that steady burn like the sun.” Soundkillers crooner Dion Primo echoes the sentiment, lamenting that “the n*gga that you knew from elementary’ll make your ass an unsolved mystery” on the final verse in addition to contributing a soulful hook. Are you feeling this pensive street banger? This moody cut is one of many fresh records slated for inclusion on the NYC mainstays’ Black Cocaine EP, scheduled to hit stores November 25.
