Crack On Steroids

As a black Jew, it’s always exciting to see Judaism in Hip-Hop (except when it comes in the form of Drake’s emotional raps). So you can imagine how excited I was to hear N.O.R.E. hook up with Action Bronson to tell listeners “Mazel Tov!” on the lead single off his Crack on Steroids mixtape. Produced by King David, this record features a dramatic introduction with heavy synths and some orchestra strings that flow into the beat nicely. Once the drums come in, we get that heavy snare with a dark piano riff that makes the instrumental seem more like a slow motion movie ending than it does a celebration.  N.O.R.E, who has been in the rap game now for over 15 years, has a lot to celebrate for, which he explains in detail in his verses.  Bronson (who is of Jewish-Albanian heritage) also has a lot to celebrate in his early promising career as his guest 16 gives listeners a nice recap of the “action” he has seen over the past year.  Overall, the song is an enjoyable listen.  It may not be a “radio smasher” or one that will get tons of play years for now, but it definitely makes me want to check the upcoming mixtape and see what N.O.R.E still has left.
