Soul Food (Soundtrack)

For some, Throwback Thursday means posting a childhood picture on social media, but here in The DJBooth, #TBT means one thing: bringing our readers a nostalgic cut to put a smile on your face. Today’s throwback comes from arguably the best duo in hip-hop history, Outkast, and a record that you might not be as familiar with, but (in my opinion) belongs in the conversation of the best Kast songs ever. In Due Time is largely overlooked, as it comes from the soundtrack for the 1997 movie Soul Food, but the song features the ATL duo spitting some deep, contemplative bars over their own soulful, breezy production. They are joined by another legend, Cee-Lo, whose signature vocals gives some inspiration when things don’t seem to be going your way. The recently re-released visuals are as thorough and nourishing as the song itself, featuring Big Boi driving down a country road in Georgia, car full of kids, and then picking up both Cee-Lo and Andre 3000, who has to escape from a prison chain gang before changing into some distinctly ‘90s garb. The highlight comes when Andre is running from the chain gang and puts his own spin on the cinematic/athletic shtick. We are all hoping for a new Outkast album, however unlikely, but while a reunited full-length would be great, let’s not forget that we’ve already been provided with a classic. Who knows, maybe there are more classics to unearth?
