None (Promo Single)

Usually, when we feature a record with an acronymic title, I can make an educated guess as to what it stands for. This time around, I just went ahead and spoiled it for myself—which was a wise decision, because never in a million years would I have guessed that Phil Beaudreau‘s latest release was a cover of Beach Boys classic I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times. Strange as it may sound to fuse the Bostonian singer/songwriter’s synth-heavy, hip hop-tinged sound with the ‘60s rockers’ dreamy pop melodies, the combination works brilliantly. Producer Dawaun Parker crafts a lush, synth-laced soundscape with a subtly psychedelic vibe, and Beaudreau even manages to channel a bit of Brian Wilson’s doleful vocal presence. This cover isn’t attached to a larger project, but those who like what they’re hearing should keep their browsers locked for the latest on the artist’s currently-unscheduled debut set, ETHER.
