The Real Testament

Time and again we comment on the inability of artists to produce material the general public can relate to.  Every so often, however, a single is released that almost everyone can understand and it has nothing to do with being “Hip Hop.”  Florida rapper Plies launched his career earlier this year with the smash single, Shawty, and followed it up with the Akon-collaboration Hypnotized.  Both singles received a plethora of airplay and buzz; neither broke down any topical barriers.  On Plies third single, Runnin My Momma Crazy, the tables have turned.  In an ode to his loving mother, Plies vividly describes the life he has led and the inadvertent and detrimental effects it has caused “one helluva lady.”  Not everyone can specifically relate to Plies upbringing, or his mother-and-son relationship, but the topic of love is understood worldwide.
