With so many popular rappers edging toward R&B, collaborating with non-hip hop artists or defying genre categories altogether, someone’s gotta keep heads supplied with that meat-and-potatoes street music. On King Push, the latest single off his soon-to-be-released debut album, Pusha T makes a strong case that he’s the man for the job. In his trademark deadpan delivery, the Clipse emcee assures listeners that he’s going to stick with what he does best: ”I rap, n**ga, about trap, n**ga, I don’t sing hooks.Joaquin Phoenix—yes, that Joaquin Phoenix—handles production; the movie star-turned beatsmith’s ominous synth instrumental incorporates a vocal sample recently flipped in Kanye’s New Slaves. An uncredited director provides visuals to accompany the cut. Fans will be able to find King Push and much more on the artist’s My Name Is My Name LP, set to hit record stores and online retailers next Tuesday, October 8.
