Straight, No Chaser LP

As its title indicates, REKS’ next full-length is a musical draught that comes Straight, No Chaser—unless you count the hustlers depicted in hot pursuit of paper on the project’s inaugural leak. On Chasin’, project collaborator Statik Selektah‘s understated bassline, pensive piano chords and loping breakbeat set the stage for his mic-rocking colleague’s impressionistic account of life on the hustle. While the Boston representative can always be counted on for thought-provoking rhymes, REKS outdoes himself here, interweaving gritty imagery with references to the Underground Railroad, the works of W.E.B. DuBois and Eldridge Cleaver’s Soul on Ice. The result is an intricate tapestry of street storytelling that’ll have lyrical heads nodding in appreciation—that is, if they’re not already nodding along to the beat. Does this cut leave you craving more bracing underground bangers from REKS and Statik? Good, because that’s exactly what you’ll find on Straight, No Chaser, scheduled to hit record store shelves and online retailers April 24.
