It’s a widely-acknowledged fact that, in order to get exposure on mainstream radio and music television, an emcee is often forced to confine his or her rhymes to certain topics, while avoiding others altogether.  REKS pokes fun at this unfortunate truth on his latest street single, echoing the plea of underground rappers everywhere: “Play My Music!”  Over mellow, midtempo production by Statik Selektah, the Boston rapper crafts a catchy, clever record with lyrics guaranteed to keep it off the mainstream airwaves (“I ain’t on a major, I ain’t got the paper to pay your payola…”); he even caps things off with a sarcastically Auto-Tuned closing line.  Though the mercenary nature of the industry has REKS sprouting a few More Grey Hairs every year, it’s clear that he’s more concerned with making good music than chasing the latest fads—fans of bona fide, lyrically-driven hip-hop would do well to pick up his fourth studio album when it hits stores this March.
