If recent In the Mix interviewee Rhymefest’s new track Letter sounds a little familiar, that’s because Wale has also dropped an identically titled and very similarly produced track. So what’s the story behind the shared song? Fest promises he’ll reveal the details “soon”, but for now the origins are a mystery, meaning our energies are best spent concentrating on the song at hand. In addition to a hook from John “I only f**k white girls” Mayer, Letter contains some of the most innovately simple production I’ve heard in a minute as producer Animal House fills the track with acoustic guitars and…is that an accordion I hear? Lyrically, Fest takes a personal turn on Letter by telling the story of a close friend who passed away with gripping honesty and emotion: “I don’t know how we arrived here, but this the block, I’m not fittin’ to die here.” I can’t speak for the rest of the Booth, but if his upcoming project, the Dangerous 5-18 Mixtape, is all this good, we’re in for one hell of a treat when it drops May 1….and when his album El Che hits our eardrums May 18. Mark your calendars accordingly.
