Rihanna - Man Down

Album:

Since Rihanna left the innocence of her early work behind to pursue a darker artistic vision, we’ve learned that the Bajan songstress has a taste for whips and chains, and she’s even down for the occasional game of Russian Roulette. But… murder? Guess this “good girl” really has gone bad. Man Down, the latest official single off the artist’s fifth full-length, is a gritty reggae ballad with a nonetheless radio-ready vibe– co-written, not-too-surprisingly, by Caribbean-pop genii Timothy and Theron Thomas, together known as Rock City. Producer Sham‘s breezy yet ominous, synth-driven skank groove sets the mood as the singer chronicles a public altercation that turns into a “real sticky situation” when her handgun enters the picture. Though I’m not sure if I buy Rihanna as a killer, there’s no disputing this joint’s catchiness. Enough outta me, though – do you think Man Down is fresh enough to stand alongside Rihanna’s previous hits? Debate away. Oh, and for those who are are somehow browsing DJBooth from under a rock, Rihanna’s Loud dropped last November, and is available now in stores and online.
