First things first, it’s ok to admit that you don’t know what the “disparate” in Disparate Youth means. Don’t worry, I had to look it up too, and I’m (allegedly) a professional writer. According to the good ol’ dictionary it means “containing or made up of fundamentally different and often incongruous elements.” Yep, that sounds a lot like Santigold. For her new single the always unpredictable singer/fashionista/human etc., who we actually haven’t heard from since last year’s Go, links up with producer Ricky Blaze for one of the more innovative beats you’ll hear: who said machine gun burst guitar lines, up-tempo piano lines and electro percussion don’t mix? For her part, Santigold delivers an understated yet powerful vocal performance, saving her best work for a chant ready hook that’s sure to become a staple of her live show. Sounds pretty damn disparate to me, whatever that means. Fans of musical eclecticism are in luck: Santigold’s Disparate Youth EP will arrive on the UK’s shores on April 8, followed by her upcoming full-length album, Master of My Make Believe, set to drop sometime later this year.
