Self Scientific ft. Big K.R.I.T. - War Stories

Posted 5 years ago
Featuring:
Producer:
DJ Khalil
Album:
Trials of the Blackhearted

In today’s rap game, there’s no shortage of artists eager to sell a glamorized depiction of the ‘hood life (I’ll leave the name-naming to y’all). Whether you decry this practice as a bad influence on the youth or consider it all in good fun, it never hurts to be reminded of the ugly truth about urban poverty and crime. Always good for a reality check (see also: their last feature, the Oscar Grant-dedicated Peaceful), Oakland duo Self Scientific share a few War Stories on their latest single. Over DJ Khalil‘s understated sample work, emcee Chace Infinite spits biographical sketches of two street archetypes: a gangster’s son who, despite his mother’s best efforts, is seduced into the dealer’s life, and a drug-addicted prostitutes daughter who, thanks to a combination of desperation and low self-esteem, follows in her mother’s footsteps. Booth favorite Big K.R.I.T. provides a ray of hope on the back, acknowledging the tragic consequences of poverty but celebrating his own escape from the block. Those who appreciate this sobering selection can find War Stories and much more on Self Scientific’s Trials of the Blackhearted LP, due out next Tuesday, April 25.
