While engaging in the “sincerest form of flattery” may earn an artist short-term success, musical copycats are always, eventually unmasked for what they are: pale imitations of the real thing. Sene, for one, cares more about creating quality tunes than sucking up to the big names. On this newly-leaked mixtape cut, the emcee informs listeners that he’s not one to Follow Leaders, even if his determination to forge his own path in the game means passing up the chance at fast cash. Beatsmith Tranzformer backs Sene’s confidently flowed musings on authenticity with an instrumental sure to bring a smile to the faces of old-school Nintendo fans (myself included), superimposing 8-bit synths over a head-nodding percussion loop. Trendy or no, Sene’s commitment to realness and dedication to his craft will undoubtedly score him points with heads in the Booth. Originally featured on Booth-presented compilation mixtape Brooklyn’s Finest, Leaders is also set for inclusion on the artist’s own forthcoming street album, Reality Bites. Watch for the 2DopeBoyz/KevinNottingham/RubyHornet/DJBooth.net-presented project to hit our front page “soon.”
