9th Wonder
A Dream Deferred

If your earliest hip-hop memories involve Soulja Boy, Skyzoo is about to lay down some serious history. On his new release, Jansport Strings, we get to hear a mini-autobiography that gives us a look into a young Skyzoo’s life as a Brooklyn kid seeing the harsher realities of life while simultaneously falling in love with hip-hop. The legendary 9th Wonder provides the backdrop for Sky’s tale with a horn looped beat that sets a perfect backdrop for Sky’s always vivid wordplay: “Doin numbers, trying to do the summer / dreamin out of control, we tried to cop the Hummers.” Close things off with a clip of hip-hop’s first TV show, Video Music Box, and the Chi-Ali track Age Ain’t Nothin But A Number that first inspired Skyzoo to pursue the art of emceeing, and you’ve got a new joint guaranteed to get heads anticipating the release of Sky’s A Dream Deferred album, due out October 2.  In the meantime, fans can cop his previous effort, The Great Debater, right now for free via The DJBooth.
