Slum Village - Lock It Down

Posted 6 years ago
Producer:
J. Dilla
Album:
Villa Manifesto

It seems like the postmortem game should be a subgenre in hip-hop music, as it always seems like deceased artists continue to deliver better material than the living long after they’ve passed (I’m looking at you Tupac). This time around it’s Slum Village that is giving us a reason to celebrate with their final version (a low-quality version leaked this spring) of Lock It Down, a street record that lets listeners in on some brand new, gritty J. Dilla production. The Village must have been aware that the focus on their track would be on their late partner’s beat mastery, but they manage to do a great job of making the project their own, revolving around the trio’s strengths in a raw underground cut that shines a light on their individual talents. If you liked this link to the past, be sure to check out Slum Village’s latest (and possibly last) effort, Villa Manifesto, due out July 27. Keep it locked down to the Booth for more.
