Slum Village ft. De La Soul - Turning Me Off

Dirty Slums

It was said that the undeniably round backside of a beautiful lady inspired the Tribe’s Bonita Applebum, and a whole generation of men to fall heavy for the female form. But what lies behind the veneer of beauty? Slum Village’s Turning Me Off, featuring De La Soul, serves as the epilogue to that track: documenting a series of females of ill-repute and selfish intentions, and speaking eloquently on the artists’ frustration with the decline of self-respect. “In somebody’s penthouse, in some big city / Laying on her backside, tears in her eyes / Livin’ the life while her dignity dies.” The track unveils graphic narratives and sordid details, building vivid imagery that elicits disgust and sympathy. Contemplative, weighted, lyrics are accompanied by somber guitar strums, deep drums, and ethereal keys. Producer Young RJ samples James Brown’s King Heroin throughout, not only lending an eerie undertone, but drawing a strong comparison between a pleasurable, but detrimental drug and attractive females with few redeeming qualities. This is the first song from their forthcoming Dirty Slums mixtape, with Mick Boogie, out next week, Tuesday, March 27 and featuring appearances by Rapper Big Pooh, Skyzoo, Big Sean and more.
