SMKA ft. Yelawolf - Deer Mama

Every since Tupac made loving your mama cool more than a decade ago, even the hardest rappers have seemingly felt the need to profess their love for their own mothers; or, in Yelawolf’s case, reminisce about how she used to put NyQuil in his baby bottle. An anti-“I love you mom” track of sorts, Yela’s Deer Mama takes a southern soaked, 70’s-esque, high hat stuttering beat from 808 Blake of production duo SMKA and flips it into an unflinching look at his younger years spent with a drug addicted mother. In typical Yela fashion, the Bama emcee pulls in references from everyone to The Fugees to Outkast to craft his tale, a tale that ultimately ends on a hopeful note: “I can’t change that picture, but I can throw it in a better frame.” His relationship with his mom was far from ideal, but at least he’s translating those struggles into great music. For more dopeness be sure to check out Yelawolf’s Trunk Muzik mixtape, and SMKA’s The 808 Experiment (Vol. 2), due out next Monday, January 18.
