An up-and-coming rhymesayer repping Albuquerque, New Mexico, Solar One makes his grand entrance into the DJBooth with the newly-released Call It Off. DMT (of Pharaoh One & DMT) mans the mixing boards on this pensive underground banger, blending a Spanish-guitar loop with driving percussion and subtle synth ambiance as the unsigned emcee shares some hard-hitting commentary on the rap game. In intricate, tightly-wound verses, he shakes his head at his peers’ delusions of grandeur (“We’re all so convinced that we’re making our mark / It’s almost hard to conceive we’re only playin’ our part.”) and levels with listeners regarding some of his own missteps (“I broke my back to fit in, which was a bad decision / ‘Cause I always wanted to be the type of dude that lacked description.”) This paean to realness is just one of many quality jams to be found on The Hidden Monsters LP, an upcoming compilation which will see underground emcees and producers from across the U.S. pairing up to create collaborative cuts. The set is currently unscheduled, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as further details emerge.
