The Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff - Summertime
With the mercury rising and the beach looking ever more appealing, we figured y’all might need a little something to soundtrack your warm-weather recreation. That’s why, for the latest installment of Throwback Thursdays, we’re shining the spotlight on one of hip-hop’s best-loved summer jams. The lead single off The Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff‘s senior set, Fourthbase, Summertime quickly grew in popularity after hitting the airwaves in June of 1991, reaching #1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Songs Chart and peaking at #4 on the Hot 100. The following February, the record won the duo their second Grammy. Featuring the Fresh Prince’s engaging, nostalgia-laced rhymes, delivered over Jeff’s interpolation of Kool and the Gang’s Summer Madness, the record still sounds as refreshing as a tall glass of lemonade 20-plus years after its release. While I’m not holding my breath for any more bangers from Will Smith, those who enjoyed revisiting this gem can tune into the Booth next Throwback Thursday for another blast from the past.
