No need to check for your wallet or clutch your purse; the only thing Thief is gonna be stealing from you this morning is your heart. OK, I apologize—that was corny as f**k. Atrocious puns aside, on new single (and EP title track) Closer the Australian singer/songwriter showcases a sound that adventurous R&B fans will likely be powerless to resist. Here, a bouncy arpeggiated-synth beat by Thief and Matt Redlich sets the stage for incongruously caustic verses dedicated to a soon-to-be-ex girl. Though lines like “I’m tired of watching you f**k me over.” are delivered with the appropriate bile, the artist’s ear-pleasing falsetto ensures that the overall cut is more sweet than bitter. Closer is scheduled for a UK single release March 25. The EP of the same name will follow on Tuesday, May 12.
Update: We have added the Robert Wallace-directed visuals for Thief’s Closer single.
