Hailing from T-Dot, Ontario, Tre Leji is a buzzmaking rap crew consisting of South P!, Guzo Luchini and Dubby Freelo. At least, that’s what I thought before listening to I Am Him (He Is Me), a new single seemingly designed to confuse me as much as possible. My advice? Stop trying to keep track of who’s who and simply enjoy the witty, tightly-wound bars they deliver over P!‘s mellow, sampled loops and electronic percussion. (They refer to their distinctive production style as “futuristic boom-bap.”) Do Tre Leji, as their Facebook bio boasts, represent “the future of Canadian urban music as a whole?” It’s a lofty claim, but not one I’d dismiss out of hand. In any case, those who like what they’re hearing can find plenty more where I Am Him came from on new EP Capsules +, available now for purchase via the group’s Bandcamp page.
