Treacherous Records ft. Jay Rock & K-Young - Back in the Days

By | 4 years ago
Track: Back in the Days
Producer: Komplex

Whether you came up in a gated community or the most impoverished inner-city ‘hood, there’s no escaping nostalgia’s pull. Making its world premiere as the latest leak off Treacherous Records’ forthcoming, DJBooth-hosted compilation album, Back in the Days finds West Coast stalwart Jay Rock offering a fond yet gritty chronicle of his formative years in Watts, Los Angeles—an economically disadvantaged neighborhood historically plagued by gang violence. Over Komplex’ poignant keys, the freestyle alum describes the everyday ambiance of his childhood habitat: “Crack pipes, bullet shells in the sand where we play. Dead body in the street, seen it every other day.” Nonetheless, his tone is wistful, and he makes sure to thank the Man Upstairs for the few blessings he and his family did possess. K-Young (a fellow freestyle alum) provides additional guest vocals, quoting straight from West Coast veteran Ahmad‘s 1994 hit, Back in the Day, on the chorus. Feeling it? More bangers from the whole Treacherous stable await on The Mint Room, scheduled to hit our mixtape page July 9, for free streaming and download. (A separate version of the project will also be available for purchase on iTunes.)
