The Blend Mixtape

As anyone who’s attended a performance by the DMV heavyweight is well aware, Wale puts on an absolutely killer live show. His secret? The UCB, a locally legendary Go-Go ensemble who have backed the emcee at performances across the nation. On new mixtape single Diana (their Booth debut), the group take center stage, serving up a lushly funky groove loaded with syncopated percussion and smooth guitar licks as frontman Tre (who produces the cut along with MikeyMike and fellow UCB member Rashad) shows off his silky-smooth falsetto. Wale drops a few energetic bars on the back end, sounding utterly in his element over the band’s swung groove, and past tour mate Colin Munroe rounds out the guest lineup, enhancing the track’s texture with some of his trademark, studio-tweaked backing vocals. Could UCB be the group to bring Go-Go into the national spotlight? Never say never! If you like what you’re hearing, you can catch both Wale and UCB on tour right now – and if you can’t make it, you’ll be able to find plenty more high-caliber musicianship and infectious tunes on their Blend Mixtape, due out in late summer.
