Though Wale‘s first feature of the New Year, Lloyd collab Let’s Chill, scored the DMV repper respectable reader reviews when it hit our frontpage last week, its strictly-for-radio vibe left some craving more substantial fare. Those worried that the D.C. native’s become too focused on catering to the mainstream will be pleased to hear his devil-may-care attitude and aggressive delivery back in full force on I Don’t Know, leak numero uno off 3 Mill Productions’ forthcoming compilation album. Here, Three Mill affiliate Roc on Command serves up a head-banging electric-guitar backdrop for the headliner’s verses, which come so dense with memorable lines that I can forgive him for dusting off that shopworn “living like a rock star” cliché. Apollo The Great‘s guest 16 on the middle is a similar story; while I can’t really get behind a KISS namedrop, the Camden, N.J. buzzmaker’s inspired braggadocio and self-assured flows are plenty impressive enough to carry him over that minor speed bump. But enough outta me – what do you think? If you’re digging it, more hot beats and guest features await on 3 Mills’ self-titled set, due out in April.
