As anyone who’s watched Schoolhouse Rock knows, knowledge is power—and, while important steps have been made in the direction of civil rights and racial equity, the U.S. educational system and popular culture does black Americans a grave disservice by whitewashing (literally) the contributions of African people and societies to world history, science and philosophy. Here to take a preliminary step toward rectifying the situation is Will Brennan, who informs his brothers and sisters that “This Land is your land” on his latest single (a Booth-exclusive world premiere!). Over Somong‘s soulful yet steely-eyed sample work, the Florida mic-murderer spits a rueful depiction of life in the urban jungle before launching into a crash course on the achievements of African antiquity, many of which were later appropriated and attributed to Western intellectual icons like Ptolemy, Socrates, Aristotle and Hippocrates. Feeling this edutaining selection? Then prepare for more knowledge to be dropped on Brennan’s Booth-sponsored Rite of Passage LP, scheduled for release Feb. 16. In addition, watch for this record’s official video to hit the ‘net in the near future.
