Love is often referred to as a battlefield, but the analogy isn’t complete unless you know the weapons being used. A battle fought using conventional arms—the silent treatment, refusal to do household chores and other petty, passive-aggressive power plays—offers the possibility of a truce, but when weapons of mass destruction come into play, one false move can mean mutual destruction. On All Out War, the Booth newcomer’s latest single and EP title track, William Howard finds himself in a nuclear standoff with his girl over the threat of her returning to an ex-lover’s arms. Knowing that he’ll be forced to retaliate in kind if she goes through with it, the North Carolina crooner soulfully urges her to take her finger off the button—in fact, he’d be perfectly happy if she never mentioned said man’s name in his presence again. From that summary, you might expect a record simmering with barely-contained aggression, but the presentation is as gentle as the message is forceful; producer David Spencer provides a lush, ear-pleasing arrangement featuring delicate string and piano arpeggios over a subtly martial rhythm section, and Howard exhibits a uniquely soothing, weathered vocal presence. Will the artist and his girl succeed in negotiating a peace agreement? You can hear the rest of the story on All Out War (the EP), available now via iTunes.
