YC The Cynic - Hunts Point Diaspora

Posted 2 years ago
Producer:
Frank Drake

YC The Cynic‘s always peppered his records with social commentary, but never have we heard him drop knowledge in as concentrated a form as he does on his latest feature, Hunts Point Diaspora. This unreleased record takes its name from the notoriously impoverished South Bronx neighborhood where the artist came up, which lost more than two-thirds of its population due to harsh living conditions during the 1970s. Of course, it was the poorest, mainly black and Hispanic residents who had no choice but to stay and suffer. Backed by Frank Drake‘s brass/vocal samples, YC spins that tragedy into a story of triumph, celebrating those (including himself) who have made it out despite the forces that hold them back, and encouraging others to follow their example. Though this lyrically-insightful joint didn’t make the cut, those feeling it can find more food for thought on the GNK album, available online as of late August.
