What does success look like? For some—and I’m looking at many, if not most rappers here—that vision includes fly clothes, expensive whips, one or more mansions and enough cash to buy it all over again. Yo Dot, however, is thinking slightly smaller for the time being. As the DJBooth newcomer puts it on this inaugural mixtape leak, an exclusive world premiere, “I’m Just Trying to Live.” Backed by Deonte Hayes’ tuneful production, the artist reflects on the frustration of seeing circumstance thwart even the humblest ambitions. Terry T echoes the headliner’s sentiments on verse two, and Logic (of Logic and Raze) drives the point home with a poignant guest chorus. Like what you’re hearing? Then stay tuned for more real-life music leading up to the September 6, arrival of Yo Dot’s DJBooth-hosted Red Mist LP.
