Counting Sheep Series (Week 10)

Since April 7th, Booth readers have been Counting Sheep in anticipation of Young Son‘s sophomore album.  Looking to end his reader-acclaimed, DJBooth.net-exclusive series on a high note, the Minneapolis emcee has saved one of his most potent and timely jams for last.  On the final installment, Hannah returns to his conscious-rap roots to address the social and economic ills that leave him with a Heavy Soul.  Flowing over a slow-burning instrumental by Chris Love (his cousin),  the rapper explores the root causes of inner-city poverty and crime in two reflective verses, and R&B up-and-comer (and Young Son’s high-school classmate) Adrien Lindsey tops the track off with his weathered, emotionally-charged hook vocals.  This thought-provoking cut is a fitting denouement to one stellar 10-week run, and a tantalizing appetizer for the late-summer arrival of Dreamer’s Poetry.  In the meantime, fans can look forward to the June 15th release of Young Son’s Booth-sponsored Counting Sheep mixtape, which will include the entire series as well as a few previously-unreleased cuts, an interview with our own DJ Z, and messages of support from listeners (call 763-244-1318 to leave your own, but keep it clean!)
