YP ft. Kamilah Summer - Pray for Em
In September of 2009, the nation was rocked by news that Derrion Albert, a 19-year-old student from Chicago’s South Side, had been beaten to death after inadvertently getting in the middle of a gang conflict. A little over a year later, the Windy City is still struggling to come to grips with that tragedy and others like it – as are countless other communities across the nation. On new single Pray for ‘Em, Chicago native YP takes a moment to reflect upon the consequences, and the causes of such senseless violence. Backed by producer Mark Byrd‘s muted brass and vocal samples, the freestyle series alum vividly describes the inner-city conditions that give rise to needless suffering, and offers his sympathy to anyone who has lost a loved one. R&B singer Kamilah Sumner handles guest duties, tying the record together with a chorus as smooth as it is poignant. If you appreciated this heartfelt joint, you’ll find more deep thoughts (along with, presumably, some lighter fare) on YP’s RubyHornet/DJBooth-cosponsored No Sleep street album, scheduled to hit our mixtape page for streaming and download sometime in December.
