Despite an exclusive DJBooth freestyle, a string of Booth-approved releases and a free album with DJ RTC that work up a lot of sleepers and a name that’s virtually impossible to misspell, there are still some people out there asking who YP is. Well questioners, consider Who I Be your hip-hop answer. Contrary to his name, producer Xtreme crafts a carefully controlled, measured and boom-bap influenced beat guaranteed to get heads a noddin. Fitting though it’s the Chi-Town native’s rhymes that take center stage as YP not only delves into some autobiographical background – there isn’t a drug the man hasn’t sold - but does so with an undeniably smooth flow and original references: “Hit the door and I’m out till the break of dawn / catchin bullets like Lynn Swan.“ (Now there’s a man who knows his NFL history.)
