Why Vulnerability Is a Precursor to Healing: Guest Editorial
“When I write music, my intention is to get out my truth for myself and then secondarily for listeners to enjoy and make a connection.”
Born in Nigeria, 25-year-old TOBi moved to Canada at 8 years old with his father. They were the first of his family to travel to North America, living together for a year until his mom, and siblings could immigrate over. The initial culture shock made TOBi aware of his physical presence in social settings, but music was his outlet to express his raw thoughts and emotions. At age 23, he decided to fully pursue his musical dreams.
In 2016, he released his debut EP, FYi, which included the single “iNDECiSiONS.” In 2017, TOBi's demo "Hidden Fences," written about the multi-dimensional effects of gentrification, was placed on the season two finale of HBO's Insecure. Last year, TOBi linked up with producer Take a Daytrip (Sheck Wes, 6LACK, Juice WRLD) to drop “January December,” all of which set the stage for the release of his debut full-length album STILL, out now.
